Stoneheart stood perfectly still, listening for prey. Not a sound, he was beginning to wonder if it was too hot even under the shelter of the tree's. Stoneheart opened his mouth to draw in the scents of the forest. Stoneheart was about to move on when he he caught a whiff of an animal, a mouse! To his right. Stoneheart began to stalk it slowly, he was within pouncing distance. A sudden rustle in the underbrush behind him drove the mouse into it's den. Stoneheart whipped around crossly to see who had cost him his kill

This Greenleaf had been the hottest one Sagestar had seen in all his years in the forest. This part of the evergreen forest, which was normally freezing due to the snow, was just as hot as the rest of the woods. Sagestar had sent his most capable warriors, that weren't on patrol, to hunt for freshkill for the clan. Food was scarce due to the scorching temperatures, and Sagestar was getting worried that a famine might ensue.
With the queens and medicine cat back at camp guarding the kits and camp, and with the urgent need to find water, Sagestar left the camp. He took his apprentice, Mudpaw, with him seeing the oppurtunity for some training.
"Mudpaw, you seem like an observant cat, do you think there might be some water up here in the evergreen forest, where the snow usually is?" said Sagestar. Just as Sagestar said this, he noticed one of his warriors, Stoneheart, nearby. Apparently he and Mudpaw had accidentally interrupted the gray warrior's hunt.
"How goes the hunt Stoneheart?" said Sagestar.

"You'd think it was leaf-bare with how scarce the prey." Stoneheart replied with an icy calm. The heat from the sun beat down upon his pelt, making standing in one place for any length of time unbearable. "First time out with your apprentice I take it." Stoneheart meowed in a much better humor, "Well you better train him fast, we're in desperate need of fresh warriors." Stoneheart turned to look into the eyes of his brother, the eyes that looked back were not those of an excited apprentice but those of a nervous kit
Mudpaw glanced from side to side, the evergreen forest was a very sheltered area, maybe too sheltered, Mudpaw imagined enemies lurking behind every rock. "No! Your not a helpless kit anymore, your a GeoClan apprentice, Act like one!" he thought to himself. Mudpaw closed his eyes to drive the fear from his mind. He returned his brothers stare with equal intensity

"Yes, it's your brother's first journey out of camp, but I think he'll do just fine." Seeing the two siblings staring at each other, Sagestar realized there was tension between them, but decided to stay out of it. "So have you seen any sources of clean water while on your hunt, Stoneheart?" said Sagestar.

Crystalpaw a short furred, silver classic tabby she-cat, bounded out of camp, but quietly and followed Sagestar, Stoneheart and Mudpaw.

"There's water just over that ridge." Stoneheart gestured with his head, his eyes focused on Sagestar. Stoneheart's ears swiveled to hear the impatient paw steps of an apprentice hurrying along behind them, He almost purred at the memory of sneaking out of camp when he was an apprentice, but the the grim face of his mentors murderer flashed in his mind, these woods were no place for an apprentice to be alone "You know your being followed right." Stoneheart gazed back past Sagestar into the underbrush
Mudpaw turned around trying to scent their stalker, was it a clan cat he couldn't tell. The wind changed bringing the scent of the cat toward them. Mudpaw immediately recognized his denmate "It's only Crystalpaw, his mentor must not have left him at camp."

Crystalpaw poked her silver tabby head out of where she was hiding, "Well it looks like I would need to get better, but I would of been fine if the wind didn't suddenly change" she piped up.

"I thought I told you to wait for me back at camp!" Stoneheart meowed angrily. Didn't his apprentice know how dangerous it was out in the open. Stoneheart let out a sigh, no his apprentice probably didn't, probably because Stoneheart didn't explain anything to her. The thought of being a mentor when his own had been taken from him was very melancholy. "As an apprentice you should follow the orders your mentor gives you, but I'll let it slide this time you can join me on the hunt."

"Yes" Crystalpaw squeaked, the silver tabby she-cat would be bouncing around as well, but she was slightly controlling herself not to. It seems she just had too much energy to burn, well she was hoping that she was the one to catch most prey, and she thought staying back at camp was too boring.

Sagestar knew all along that he was being followed, but wanted to see if Mudpaw would point it out on his own. It looked like Sagestar had a lot of training to do to get his apprentice up to speed.
"Yes, Crystalpaw, it is very unwise to leave camp by yourself, especially if your unfamiliar with our territory. You're lucky I'm not your mentor, or you'd be sent back to camp to fetch moss for the elders" said Sagestar.
"Well Stoneheart, now that your apprentice is here, try to keep an eye on her", said Sagestar, "With prey scarce as it is, four cats on a hunt seems like a little much, why don't we take our apprentices and split up, on seperate hunts?".

Stoneheart leaped into the air to catch the plump robin that was flying through the at top speed. He caught it mid-leap, silencing it before it could make a chirp. Stoneheart landed gracefully the robin clamped tightly in his jaws, he dropped his catch and looked up at his leader, "Maybe this is a sign our luck is changing, and sure as he said that he could smell several mice somewhere among the trees
Mudpaw while gazing in awe as his brother made that catch in the air, smelled a mouse at the base of the trees just behind them, he crept upon it slowly while his brother talked to Sagestar. Mudpaw stepped as lightly as possible until it was too late, he leaped and the mouse was fresh-kill for the clan

Seeing her mentor and Mudpaw catch some prey she wanted to as well. Crystalpaw opened her mouth and scented the area around her, of cause she wanted to show off. The silver tabby soon spotted the familiar brown fur of a mouse and crouched down, her curled ears flicked a couple of time before she started to stalk the brown creature, maybe if she caught it, they would stop underestimating her. When the she-cat was about a fox length away she made a little trip on a rock, but she quickly recovered as the mouse tried to get away and she gracefully jumped landing on it and snapping it's neck making another piece of prey for the clan. She picked it up and half walked and half jogged back up to the group.

"And I haven't even taught you anything yet." Stoneheart purred proudly maybe his this mentoring thing wouldn't be as bad as he first thought. "Your technique could definitely use some work, but that wasn't half-bad." He meowed. Stoneheart could see spending a great many hours of training Crystalpaw stalking techniques in the foreseeable future, but she had loads of potential. "Your the only one who hasn't caught anything Sagestar." Stoneheart's tone may have been light and breezy, but his comment was definitely a challenge

(( Italics = thoughts))
Sensing Stoneheart's challenge, Sagestar looked around and sniffed the evergreen forest air. Nothing. Well, the forest is having a drought, and the others were lucky in finding prey in such a dry and hot period, thought Sagestar to himself. Then he saw it, perfect!. On a nearby tree, about half-way up was what looked to be a bee hive. Sagestar watched it for a minute with his keen eyes to see if any bees came out, but none did. Hmm, I wonder if it's abandoned, thought Sagestar, only one way to find out.
Sagestar leaped effortlessly up the tree, and examined the beehive further. Yup, definitely abandoned, thought Sagestar as he kicked the hive down to the others, and leaped down after it, landing on the ground beside them, silently.
"First lesson Mudpaw; not all food runs from you", said Sagestar pointing to the bee hive with his paw.

Crystalpaw couldn't help but to smile more, she wasn't going to tell Stoneheart that she was good at, just watching a cat, before she could actually just copy their movements, well she also watched all the apprentices when she was still a kit, as they practise and memorised some of the moves they used on each other. The silver tabby she-cat watched as Sagestar had knocked down a beehive, she loved the taste of honey.
